Rising power bills and power cuts have pushed many Indian households to explore rooftop solar. The first question is often simple: which solar panel makes the most electricity? The answer depends on panel efficiency, roof space, sunlight, heat, shade, and the quality of the full system.

For most homes, monocrystalline panels produce the highest power from a given roof area. But the panel is only one part of the setup. A good inverter, correct installation, and regular cleaning also affect your daily output.

Types of solar panels

Most panels sold for homes fall into three groups: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film.

  • Monocrystalline panels: These use a single silicon crystal. They have a dark colour and offer high efficiency. They suit homes with limited roof space.
  • Polycrystalline panels: These use several silicon crystals. They often have a blue shade and cost less in some markets. They need more space for the same power output.
  • Thin-film panels: These are light and flexible in some designs. They work well for some large projects, but they need more area than most rooftop systems.

Why monocrystalline panels generate more power

Panel efficiency shows how much sunlight a panel can turn into electricity. A typical monocrystalline panel may offer about 19% to 24% efficiency. Polycrystalline panels often fall near 15% to 17%, though figures vary by model.

This means two panels with the same size may not produce the same amount of power. A more efficient panel uses roof space better. This matters in cities, where a water tank, terrace room, or nearby building may leave only a small area for solar panels.

Monocrystalline panels use a more uniform silicon structure. Electrons can move through it with less resistance. Polycrystalline panels contain many crystal sections, so the movement of electrons faces more boundaries. This lowers their efficiency.

TOPCon and HJT panels

Newer monocrystalline technologies include TOPCon and heterojunction, also called HJT. Some models offer efficiency near 22% to 24%. They can also perform better in high temperatures and low light than older panel designs.

Heat matters in India. Solar panels need sunlight, but very high temperatures can reduce their output. A panel with a lower temperature coefficient loses less power as the temperature rises. Check this figure in the product datasheet instead of relying only on the panel's name or appearance.

How much electricity can a panel make?

A panel's watt rating gives its peak power under test conditions. A 550-watt panel will not produce 550 watts all day. Sunlight changes from morning to evening, and clouds, dust, shade, heat, and wiring losses reduce actual output.

As a rough guide, one kilowatt of rooftop solar in India may generate around 3.5 to 5 units of electricity per day, depending on the location and season. A 3-kilowatt system may produce about 10.5 to 15 units on a good day. Your installer should provide an estimate based on local solar data and your roof.

Roof space, price, and payback

If roof space is tight, monocrystalline panels are often the better choice. They can provide more capacity in a smaller area. If you have a large, open roof, polycrystalline panels may still work, especially when the purchase price is lower.

Do not compare only the price of one panel. Compare the cost per watt, expected annual generation, warranty, inverter, mounting structure, installation, and maintenance. A cheaper panel that needs more space may also increase the cost of the structure and wiring.

Other factors that affect solar output

  • Shade: Even partial shade from a tree, wall, or water tank can cut generation. Ask for a shade study before installation.
  • Direction and tilt: In most parts of India, panels should face south for strong yearly output. The best angle depends on your location and roof.
  • Inverter quality: The inverter changes solar power into usable household power. Its size and efficiency must match the panel array.
  • Cleaning: Dust can reduce output, especially in dry areas. Clean panels with water and a soft tool. Do not scrub them with rough material.
  • Warranty and service: Check the product warranty, performance warranty, service network, and replacement terms.
  • Panel degradation: Solar panels lose a small amount of output each year. Check the manufacturer's promised output after 25 or 30 years.

A simple buying checklist

Before you pay an advance, ask the installer for the panel efficiency, watt rating, temperature coefficient, product warranty, performance warranty, inverter brand, estimated yearly generation, and shade analysis. Also confirm whether the quote includes mounting, earthing, net-metering support, cables, and maintenance.

For a small urban roof, a high-efficiency monocrystalline panel, paired with a suitable inverter and careful installation, can make the most of every available square metre. Your roof should not need a gym membership, but it does need a clear, shade-free layout.
