How Uttar Pradesh Leads India in Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar

Uttar Pradesh has taken the top spot in India for rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The state has installed more than 8,76,500 rooftop solar plants, moving ahead of Gujarat in total installations.

This growth is changing how homes use power. Families can produce electricity on their own rooftops, reduce their power bills and support cleaner energy. The sun, after all, sends no monthly bill.

Uttar Pradesh crosses 8.76 lakh rooftop solar installations

The state has recorded strong growth in rooftop solar installations over the past few months. District teams, power distribution companies, banks and solar vendors have worked together to speed up the process.

Officials have focused on regular district reviews, site checks, meter installation, bank follow-ups and the removal of pending cases. This close monitoring has helped more households complete the steps needed to use solar power.

Fifteen districts from Uttar Pradesh are now listed among India’s top 100 districts for rooftop solar installations. Lucknow holds the first position in the country, while Varanasi ranks tenth.

2,942 MW capacity can produce clean electricity

Uttar Pradesh now has more than 2,942 megawatts of installed rooftop solar capacity. Based on an average output of 4.5 units per kilowatt each day, these systems can produce more than 1.32 crore units of clean electricity every day.

At an estimated value of ₹6.50 per unit, this power equals more than ₹8.5 crore each day. The yearly value is estimated at over ₹3,100 crore. These figures show the scale of the change across homes, buildings and local power networks.

For a household, the benefit may appear as a lower electricity bill. For the state, the benefit includes less pressure on the power grid and a larger share of locally produced energy.

Subsidy support makes solar easier for families

The PM Surya Ghar scheme provides financial support to eligible households through central and state subsidies. In Uttar Pradesh, the impact of central subsidy support is reported at more than ₹5,722 crore, while state subsidy support is above ₹2,000 crore.

The exact subsidy for a household depends on factors such as the size of the system and the rules that apply to the application. People who want to install a rooftop solar plant should check the official scheme portal, use an approved vendor and follow the process set by their local electricity distribution company.

The usual steps include submitting an application, selecting an approved vendor, completing the site survey, installing the system and arranging inspection and metering. Banks may also be involved when customers use financing support.

Solar power saves land and cuts emissions

Rooftop solar uses space that already exists. Since panels are placed on homes and other buildings, the state does not need to acquire large new areas for every project.

Based on an estimate of four acres per megawatt, the current rooftop solar capacity in Uttar Pradesh helps save more than 11,700 acres of land. This land can remain available for homes, farming, business and other uses.

Clean electricity from these systems may also reduce more than 34 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The report compares this benefit with the carbon absorbed by more than 15 crore trees in one year. This tree comparison is an estimate, not a count of trees planted.

More than one lakh jobs linked to the solar sector

The scheme has also created work for people across the state. Uttar Pradesh has more than 8,000 empanelled vendors linked with the programme. These firms need workers for sales, system design, engineering, electrical work, installation, testing and after-sales service.

The job impact goes beyond solar companies. Transport workers, warehouse staff, packaging teams, structure fabricators, survey workers and customer service staff also support the growing market.

Repair and maintenance work will remain important as more rooftop systems become operational. This creates a need for trained electricians and young workers with skills in solar installation, wiring, safety checks and basic system care.

What households should check before installation

  • Use the official PM Surya Ghar application process.
  • Choose a vendor approved under the scheme.
  • Check whether the roof gets enough sunlight during the day.
  • Ask about system size, warranty, maintenance and installation cost.
  • Confirm the meter and inspection process with the local DISCOM.
  • Keep bank and identity documents ready for the subsidy process.

With more homes producing power on their own roofs, the scheme is linking lower bills with local jobs, cleaner electricity and better use of existing buildings across Uttar Pradesh.
