The goal is simple: cut diesel and electricity costs, reduce dependence on the grid, and give farmers a steady water supply. How much subsidy can you get?

Under this scheme, the central and state governments together cover 60% to 90% of the cost of a solar pump. The usual split works like this:

  • 60% comes as a direct subsidy from the government
  • 30% comes as a low interest loan from the bank
  • 10% is what you pay from your own pocket

Some states go further. Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan run special drives that give small and marginal farmers up to 90% off the total cost. States in the northeast and hilly regions also get extra support from the central government, since farming there comes with its own set of challenges.

What does a solar pump actually cost?

The price depends on the size of the pump you choose, measured in horsepower (HP). Here is a rough breakdown:

  • 3 HP pump: Market price is around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh. After subsidy, you pay close to Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000.
  • 5 HP pump: Market price crosses Rs 3 lakh. After subsidy, your share drops to Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000.
  • 7.5 HP to 10 HP pump: These larger pumps, meant for bigger fields, cost Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,15,000 after subsidy.

Think of it like buying a car with most of the down payment already covered by someone else. You still pick the model that suits your land, but the bill looks a lot friendlier.

How do you apply for the subsidy?

There is no single national form to fill out. Each state runs its own process under the PM-KUSUM umbrella. Here is what you can do:

  1. Visit the official portal at pmkusum.mnre.gov.in
  2. Look for the link that leads to your state's application page
  3. If the online process feels confusing, walk into your nearest agriculture department office and ask for help

Officials there can guide you through the paperwork and tell you which documents you need, such as land records and identity proof.

Why this matters for your farm

A solar pump does more than save money on electricity bills. It gives you control over your irrigation schedule, since you no longer wait for the power supply to show up.
