Rajasthan's 150 Units Free Electricity Scheme: How to Register and Qualify

Rajasthan just made getting free electricity simpler. Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a new portal on Monday that lets people register for the state's 150 units free electricity scheme. This portal, built by Rajasthan Discoms, is part of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's push to make power cheaper and more accessible.

The response on launch day was strong. By 7:30 PM, 6,864 consumers already registered to install rooftop solar panels on their homes. Jaipur led with 3,570 registrations, followed by Ajmer with 1,975 and Jodhpur with 1,319.

What Makes This Scheme Different

This scheme connects two programs. The state government's Chief Minister Free Electricity Scheme joins hands with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Together, they offer enough financial help to make a 1.1 kilowatt solar panel system completely free.

Here's how the money works. The central government gives Rs 33,000 per installation under PM Surya Ghar (up to Rs 78,000 for systems up to 3 kilowatts). Rajasthan Discoms add another Rs 17,000. This covers the full cost of a 1.1 kilowatt panel.

Who Can Register

People already registered under the Chief Minister Free Electricity Scheme can sign up through three websites: the Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Ajmer Discom portals. You can also use the Bijli Mitra web portal.

The process is simple. Enter your K number (consumer number). Verify it with an OTP. Check if you qualify. Then confirm you have roof space and want to install solar panels.

The Installation Process

Once you register on the state portal and confirm your interest, you move to the PM Surya Ghar portal. There, you pick from a list of registered vendors who will install the panels on your roof.

What if you're not registered under the Chief Minister scheme? You can still get solar panels. Just go directly to the PM Surya Ghar portal, choose a vendor, and get the central government subsidy. But you won't get the extra Rs 17,000 from the state.

Why This Matters

Solar panels do more than save money on bills. They turn consumers into power producers. A 1.1 kilowatt system generates enough electricity to cover 150 units per month for most households. Any extra power can feed back into the grid.

The scheme targets people who already benefit from free electricity. These are typically households that use moderate amounts of power. For them, solar panels mean no electricity bills and energy independence.

The Bigger Picture

Rajasthan announced this scheme in the 2025-26 budget. The goal was to give more benefits to people already getting free electricity. The state decided to do this through solar power instead of just subsidising conventional electricity.

This approach has benefits. It reduces load on the grid. It promotes clean energy. It gives people control over their power supply. And it makes the subsidy more sustainable in the long run.

The first day numbers show people are interested. Nearly 7,000 registrations in half a day is a solid start. If this pace continues, thousands of Rajasthan homes will soon have solar panels generating free, clean electricity.

How to Get Started

Visit your Discom's website based on your area. For Jaipur, go to the JVVNL portal. Ajmer residents use the AVVNL site. Jodhpur consumers head to JDVVNL. You can also use Bijli Mitra.

Keep your K number ready. Make sure you have roof space that gets good sunlight. The registration takes just a few minutes. After that, a vendor will contact you to survey your roof and install the system.

The subsidy covers the panels, installation, and connection to the grid. You don't pay anything upfront. Once installed, the panels start generating power immediately. Your electricity metre tracks what you produce and what you use.

This scheme shows how government programs can work together. The central and state governments pool resources. Consumers get a benefit worth Rs 50,000 without spending a rupee. And Rajasthan moves closer to its clean energy goals.
