Imagine covering a lake with solar panels instead of concrete. That is exactly what India's newest energy scheme wants to do.
What Is The Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana?
The Union Cabinet gave its approval to the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana, or PM-SSY, this week. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the details with the media in New Delhi right after the Cabinet meeting.
The scheme comes with a budget of 5,070 crore rupees. The goal is simple: build floating solar power projects on water bodies and pair them with energy storage systems.
The Numbers Behind The Plan
The government wants to build 5000 MW of floating solar photovoltaic projects. Each project will come with its own energy storage system, capable of holding power for at least two hours. Add it all up, and the storage capacity across the country will reach 10,000 MWh.
That is enough stored energy to help power the grid during peak hours, when demand runs high and supply often struggles to keep up.
Why Water Bodies Make Sense
Land in India is precious. Farmers need it. Cities need it. Industries need it. So where do you put thousands of solar panels without a fight over land?
You put them on water. Vaishnaw pointed out that PM-SSY does not need any extra land acquisition. Instead, it makes use of reservoirs, canals and industrial ponds that already exist.
Think about it this way. Reservoirs sit there, mostly unused on the surface. Canals carry water across the country but not much else. Industrial ponds do their job quietly. PM-SSY turns all of these into power generators, without touching a single farm or forest.
A Few Bonus Points Nobody Talks About
Floating solar panels do more than generate power. They also cut down water evaporation from reservoirs, since the panels block direct sunlight from hitting the water. In a country where water scarcity hits hard every summer, that is not a small win.
Water also keeps the panels cool, which improves their output compared to panels sitting on hot rooftops or dry open fields.
Five Years To Get It Done
The scheme runs for five years. That gives states, developers and power companies a clear timeline to plan, build and connect these projects to the grid.
Energy storage plays a key role here too. Solar power stops the moment the sun sets, but storage systems hold on to that energy and release it later, when demand rises in the evening.
What This Means For India's Energy Goals
India has set big targets for renewable energy. Floating solar with storage adds a new tool to that toolkit, one that does not compete with agriculture or housing for space.
It also puts reservoirs and canals to a use many people never considered before. Somewhere, an engineer is probably already checking which lake gets the first set of panels.
