Picture this: your electricity bill drops close to zero, and the sun does all the work. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, in Bihar's Katihar district, this dream is turning into a real plan for thousands of homes.
The Bihar government has launched an awareness drive across all 14 blocks of Katihar district under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The goal is simple. Pick one village from each block and turn it into a Model Solar Village, where almost every rooftop carries a solar panel.
What Is A Model Solar Village?
The scheme asks each district to develop one ideal solar village. In this village, the maximum number of homes will get rooftop solar systems. The central government has set aside separate funds for this purpose, so money is not the roadblock here. Special camps are being held at Panchayat Sarkar Bhawans, where officials explain the scheme and help villagers with the application process.
Rooftop solar panels work in a straightforward way. They convert sunlight into electricity, and that power runs your home first. If your panels produce more electricity than you use, the extra power flows into the grid through a net meter. This cuts your bill and, in many cases, even earns you a bit of extra income.
How Much Subsidy Do You Get?
The subsidy amount depends on the size of your solar system:
- 1 kW system: ₹30,000 subsidy
- 2 kW system: ₹60,000 subsidy
- 3 kW or more: ₹78,000 subsidy (maximum)
Electrical Executive Engineer Dhiraj Kumar Sinha shared that the goal is 100% rooftop solar coverage in these villages. He also mentioned that if the plan takes off well, the panchayat gets an extra grant for its own development. Camps will run twice a week to keep the momentum going.
Can't Afford It Upfront? Take A Loan
Not everyone has spare cash lying around for a solar setup, and the government knows this. Banks are offering loans at a low 7% interest rate for those who want to install solar panels but need financial support. This makes the scheme accessible even for families who cannot pay the full amount right away.
