PM Surya Ghar Yojana: How to Get 300 Units of Free Electricity Every Month

Summer heat is getting intense, and air conditioners and coolers are working full time. This means electricity bills are going up. But there's a group of people who don't worry about their power bills at all. They have joined the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and now get 300 units of free electricity every month.

If you're still paying heavy electricity bills, this article will show you how to save money and go green at the same time.

What Makes This Scheme Different

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in 2024. The government wants to install solar panels on 1 crore rooftops by 2027. As of March, over 26.19 lakh homes already have solar panels installed under this scheme.

The scheme stands out because it gives you two major benefits. First, you get 300 units of free electricity each month. Second, the government pays you a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 to install the solar panels. This is not a small amount. The government has already distributed ₹17,967.53 crores as subsidies to people across India.

Run Your AC Without Worry

With 300 units of free electricity, you can run your air conditioner, refrigerator, and cooler without constantly checking the meter. Most households use between 150 to 300 units per month. This scheme covers that entire usage.

Here's something even better. The solar panels last for about 25 years. This means once you install them, you can enjoy near-zero electricity bills for the next 25 years. That's a long time to save money.

How Much Subsidy Can You Get

The subsidy amount depends on the size of the solar panel system you install. Let me break this down for you.

If your monthly electricity consumption is between 0 to 150 units, you can install a 1 to 2 kilowatt solar panel. The government will give you a subsidy of ₹30,000 to ₹60,000.

If you use 150 to 300 units per month, you need a 3 kilowatt or larger system. For this, you get a subsidy between ₹60,000 to ₹78,000.

The best part? You choose the system size based on your needs. No one forces you to pick a particular option.

Which States Are Leading

Gujarat is leading the race with 5,93,899 solar panel installations. Maharashtra comes second with 4,90,489 installations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4,20,823.

Kerala has 2,09,641 installations, Rajasthan has 1,59,566, and Madhya Pradesh has 1,04,458. These numbers show that people across different states are taking advantage of this scheme.

If your state is not on this list, don't worry. The scheme is available across India. You can apply no matter where you live.

How to Apply for the Scheme

The application process is simple. You don't need to visit any government office or stand in queues.

First, go to the official website at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Click on the 'Apply for Rooftop Solar' option.

Next, select your state and electricity distribution company. Enter your electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email address.

Log in using your consumer number and mobile number. Fill out the application form and submit it.

Once you get feasibility approval, you can install the solar panels. Make sure you use a vendor registered with your DISCOM (Distribution Company).

After installation, apply for a net meter. The DISCOM will inspect your setup. Once they approve it, they will issue a commissioning certificate. Your subsidy will then be transferred to your bank account.

Why You Should Consider This Now

Electricity prices keep going up. What you pay today will likely be higher next year. Installing solar panels now locks in your savings for 25 years.

Plus, you're helping the environment. Solar energy is clean and renewable. Every home that switches to solar reduces the load on the power grid and cuts down carbon emissions.

The government is covering a large part of the cost through subsidies. This makes solar panels affordable for most families. Without the subsidy, the initial cost might seem high. But with ₹78,000 off, the investment becomes reasonable.

Things to Keep in Mind

Make sure your roof gets good sunlight throughout the day. Shadows from trees or nearby buildings can reduce the efficiency of your solar panels.

Check the quality of the panels and the reputation of the vendor. Go with registered vendors only. This ensures you get the subsidy without any problems.

Understand the warranty terms. Good solar panels come with a warranty of 20 to 25 years. Make sure your vendor provides proper documentation.

The application process takes some time. From application to installation and subsidy disbursement, it might take a few weeks or months. Plan accordingly.

Real Savings Over Time

Let's do some quick math. If your monthly electricity bill is ₹2,000, you spend ₹24,000 per year. Over 25 years, that's ₹6,00,000.

With solar panels, your bill drops to nearly zero. Even if you spend ₹1,00,000 on installation after the subsidy, you save ₹5,00,000 over 25 years. That's a significant amount.

Some people even generate more electricity than they use. In such cases, you can sell the extra power back to the grid. This turns your rooftop into a small power plant that earns you money.

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is one of the most practical government schemes available today. It reduces your electricity bills, helps the environment, and gives you independence from rising power costs. If you own a house with a suitable roof, this scheme is worth serious consideration.
