PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Now Covers Hybrid Solar Systems

Homeowners who want solar power with backup batteries have a reason to check the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana again. The government has changed the subsidy rule to include hybrid solar systems. Earlier, these systems did not qualify because officials treated them as a high-cost or luxury option.

The change may help more homes use solar power after sunset. It may also reduce the sharp rise in demand that power grids face in the evening.

What has changed in the subsidy rule?

Under the updated rule, people who install an eligible hybrid solar system can also receive support under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The reported change applies to systems that include solar panels, a hybrid inverter and batteries.

In Uttar Pradesh, a solar system of up to 3 kilowatts can cost close to ₹2 lakh, based on the project details shared by the state agency. The total central and state subsidy for such a system can reach ₹1.08 lakh, subject to the scheme rules and approval.

Applicants should check the latest amount, approved equipment list and installation rules on the official PM Surya Ghar portal before paying an installer. Subsidy rules can depend on system size, vendor approval and the type of equipment used.

Why hybrid solar systems matter

A standard on-grid solar system works with the power grid. During the day, solar panels produce power for the home. Extra power may go to the grid, based on the local net-metering rules. But when the grid fails, the system may stop supplying power to the home.

A hybrid system adds a battery to the setup. During the day, the system can run home appliances from solar power and charge the battery. In the evening, the battery can supply power when the panels stop producing electricity.

When the battery runs low, the hybrid inverter can switch to grid power. This change takes place without asking the homeowner to move wires or search for a torch. That is one small but useful win for families that face power cuts.

How hybrid systems can help the power grid

Solar panels produce the most power during the day. This reduces the need to draw electricity from the grid at that time. The problem starts in the evening, when solar production falls but household use rises.

Many homes switch on lights, fans, televisions, water pumps and kitchen appliances after sunset. This sudden rise can place extra pressure on the grid. A battery-backed hybrid system can meet part of this demand at home.

If more homes use stored solar power in the evening, the grid may see a smaller demand spike. The system can also give families backup power during short outages.

What is included in a hybrid solar system?

  • Solar panels: These convert sunlight into electricity.
  • Hybrid inverter: This manages solar power, battery charging and grid supply.
  • Battery: This stores unused solar power for later use.
  • Mounting structure: This holds the panels on the roof.
  • Protection devices: These help protect the system from faults and voltage changes.

The battery size affects both the cost and the backup time. A small battery may run lights, fans and a Wi-Fi router. A larger battery can support more appliances, but it also needs more space and costs more.

What homeowners should check before installation

First, check whether the vendor is registered under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Use the official portal and avoid making a full payment before the system details and subsidy process are clear.

Ask the installer for a written quote. It should list the panel capacity, inverter brand, battery type, warranty, installation charges and maintenance terms. It should also state whether the price includes taxes, net-metering work and safety equipment.

Roof strength and sunlight also matter. Shade from trees, nearby buildings or water tanks can reduce solar output. The roof should have enough open space, and the wiring should meet safety standards.

Keep documents such as the electricity bill, identity proof, bank details and property information ready if the portal asks for them. The local distribution company may inspect the installation before the subsidy is released.

Hybrid solar versus regular solar

Feature Regular on-grid solar Hybrid solar
Battery backup Usually not included Included
Power during an outage Usually unavailable Available, based on battery size
Initial cost Lower Higher
Evening power use Depends on the grid Can use stored solar power

The new subsidy support may reduce the price gap between the two options. Still, homeowners should compare the total cost, expected backup time and battery replacement needs before choosing a system.
