Will the government track power used inside the home?

At this stage, the main focus is solar power generation. The system is meant to record how much electricity the panels produce. It is not described as a system for measuring every unit of electricity used by a family.

This difference matters. A rooftop system may produce 20 units in a day, while the home may use 15 units and send five units to the grid. The planned data system would focus on the 20 units produced. It may not show the full split between household use and export unless other smart metering systems provide that information.

Reports suggest that around 15% of inverters can send data through an API at present. Other systems may need a dongle or data logger before they can share information.

How can the data improve the scheme?

  • Up to ₹30,000 per kilowatt for the first 2 kilowatts
  • Up to ₹18,000 per kilowatt for the next 1 kilowatt
  • A maximum central subsidy of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kilowatts or more
