This system suits places where a grid connection is not available or where power cuts last for long periods. It can support lights, fans, routers, televisions and other appliances, based on the system size and battery capacity.

During a power cut, the battery can supply selected appliances through a backup circuit. This may include lights, fans, a Wi-Fi router and a refrigerator. Large appliances need a larger inverter and battery, which can raise the cost.

Check these points before buying

Start with your electricity bills from the past 12 months. Note your average monthly units and the appliances you use most. An installer should assess your load instead of suggesting a system based only on roof size.

Check whether your roof gets direct sunlight for most of the day. Shade from water tanks, nearby buildings and trees can reduce output. The roof must also have enough clear space and should be strong enough for the structure.

For an on-grid or hybrid system, ask the installer about net metering, approvals and the process followed by your DISCOM. Rules, fees and limits can differ across states. Do not assume that a system will export power to the grid without approval.

Ask for separate details on panel wattage, inverter capacity, battery type, warranty, installation work and annual maintenance. Confirm what the warranty covers and who will provide service. Also check if government subsidy applies to your home and system type. Use official government or DISCOM portals for current details, since schemes and limits can change.

If you live in a rented home, get written permission from the owner before planning the installation. You should also check who will pay for repairs and what happens to the system when you move. Keep these details, the final quotation and the electrical safety information in writing before work begins.
