Off-Grid Solar System Cost In India: 1kW, 3kW And 5kW Guide

Power cuts have a way of showing up right when you need electricity the most. If you live in an area where the grid takes long breaks, an off-grid solar system might make more sense than the regular on-grid setup. Unlike on-grid systems that lean on the grid for backup, off-grid systems store solar power in batteries. This means you get electricity even when the grid has no clue what's happening.

The catch? Batteries cost money, and off-grid systems usually don't get government subsidy support. So before you commit, it helps to know what you're signing up for. Here's a simple breakdown of what a 1kW, 3kW and 5kW off-grid solar system costs, and what each size can actually power.

1kW Off-Grid Solar System Cost

A 1kW off-grid solar system costs between Rs 85,000 and Rs 1,05,000. This setup typically comes with two 150Ah batteries.

On this system, you can run 3-4 LED bulbs, 2-3 fans, one TV, and charge your laptop or phone. Heavy appliances like an AC, geyser or water pump won't work here, so don't try to sneak in a room heater during winter.

This size suits small families, homes with 1-2 rooms, small shops, or rural areas that face long and frequent power cuts.

3kW Off-Grid Solar System Cost

For a 3kW system, expect to spend between Rs 2,40,000 and Rs 2,80,000.

This capacity handles all your fans, lights, TV, fridge, computer, mixer grinder, and even a water pump up to 1 HP. For backup, most people use four 150Ah batteries. If you go with a lithium battery instead, you can skip the multiple batteries altogether.

A single 48V lithium battery pack does the job here. It costs more upfront than lead-acid batteries, but it lasts 10-12 years and takes up less space. The one thing this system can't handle is running a heavy AC or geyser non-stop.

A 3kW system fits medium-sized families or homes with 3-4 rooms that want to stay independent from grid power.

5kW Off-Grid Solar System Cost

A 5kW off-grid solar system costs between Rs 3,80,000 and Rs 4,50,000.

This setup needs four to eight 150Ah batteries and can power an entire household without much strain. You can run a fridge, water pump, washing machine, oven, and even a 1.5-ton inverter AC during the day.

Running an AC on battery power drains it faster, so it makes sense to use heavy appliances during daylight hours when the panels are actively generating power. This size works well for large homes, villas, small offices, farmhouses, or any place where grid electricity is unreliable or too expensive.

Things To Keep In Mind

  • The type of solar panel (Mono PERC or Bifacial) and battery (lead-acid or lithium-ion) can change the total cost by a fair margin.
  • Space requirements go up with capacity: roughly 100 sq ft for 1kW, 300 sq ft for 3kW, and 500 sq ft for 5kW.
  • Off-grid solar systems don't come with a direct government subsidy, unlike their on-grid counterparts.

Choosing the right size comes down to your daily power needs and how often your area loses grid electricity. A 1kW system won't run your AC, and a 5kW system might be overkill for a single-room setup. Match the system to your actual usage, and you'll avoid paying for capacity you never use.
