Hybrid Solar System Cost and Subsidy Guide for Homes

You have probably heard of on-grid and off-grid solar systems. But there is a third option that quietly does a better job than both, the hybrid solar system. Think of it as the best of both worlds, minus the awkward compromises.

An on-grid system leaves you in the dark the moment the sun sets and the power goes out. An off-grid system gives you battery backup, but only a limited amount. A hybrid system fixes both these problems at once. Let's break down how it works and what it costs.

What Exactly Is a Hybrid Solar System?

  • It combines the strengths of both on-grid and off-grid solar systems in one setup.
  • It stays connected to the government power grid and also has its own battery backup.
  • During the day, solar panels power your home appliances directly. Any extra electricity generated goes into charging the battery.
  • Once the battery is full, the leftover power gets sent to the grid through net metering. This is what brings your electricity bill down.
  • If there is a power cut at night, the system switches to battery mode automatically. Your home keeps running without any interruption, something an on-grid system simply cannot do.
  • The system decides on its own when to draw power from the panels, when to use the battery, and when to send extra power to the grid.
  • Basically, you get lower bills and reliable backup, all in one package.

Cost of a 1kW Hybrid Solar System

A 1kW hybrid system suits a small home with 1-2 rooms or a small shop. It is not going to power a mansion, but it does the job for basic needs.

  • A standard on-grid setup of this size costs between Rs 45,000 and Rs 65,000. A hybrid setup for the same capacity costs between Rs 75,000 and Rs 1,10,000.
  • It usually comes with 2 batteries or one large lithium battery, generating 4-5 units of electricity daily.
  • You can run 2-3 fans, 4-5 LED lights, a TV, and charge your laptop or phone. Heavy appliances like an AC or heater are out of reach at this capacity.
  • You will need about 100 to 120 square feet of rooftop space for installation.

Cost of a 3kW Hybrid Solar System

This capacity works well for a medium-sized home, something like a 2-3 BHK apartment or independent house.

  • A 3kW hybrid system costs between Rs 2,60,000 and Rs 3,20,000. Compare this to a regular on-grid system of the same size, which costs Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 1,80,000.
  • This system generates 12-15 units of electricity every day.
  • It can run fans, lights, a fridge, washing machine, mixer, and even a 1-ton inverter AC during the day.
  • You will need roughly 250 to 300 square feet of rooftop space.

Cost of a 5kW Hybrid Solar System

If your home has 3-5 rooms and you run 2-3 ACs, this is the capacity to look at.

  • Setting up a 5kW hybrid system costs between Rs 4,40,000 and Rs 5,20,000.
  • It typically needs 4 to 8 tubular batteries, or a lithium phosphate battery with 5kWh to 10kWh capacity.
  • This system generates 20-25 units of electricity every day.
  • It can comfortably run 2 inverter ACs, a water motor, and the rest of your home appliances.
  • You will need about 400 to 500 square feet of open rooftop space.

What About Subsidy?

Here is where hybrid systems pull ahead of off-grid ones. Off-grid solar systems usually do not qualify for any government subsidy. Hybrid systems, on the other hand, are eligible for the same subsidy given to on-grid systems.

So you get the backup benefits of an off-grid system, plus the subsidy benefits of an on-grid system. That is a pretty good deal if you ask us.

Before you decide on a capacity, take a good look at your monthly electricity bill, the appliances you run daily, and the rooftop space you have. These three factors will tell you exactly which system fits your home, and your budget.
