How India’s Solar Inverter Market Is Changing for Buyers

India’s solar inverter market is moving beyond basic grid-connected systems. New products now combine solar power, batteries, backup supply, data tools and energy management. This shift is taking place across homes, commercial buildings and large solar parks.

For buyers, the choice is no longer limited to inverter size. They must also consider battery support, data security, system monitoring, grid rules and future power needs. Here are five changes shaping the market.

1. Hybrid inverters are moving into larger systems

Hybrid inverters once served mainly as home backup devices. They now support commercial and industrial, or C&I, projects as well. These systems can manage solar generation, battery charging, battery discharge, grid supply and backup loads through one platform.

Solis launched a 125 kW smart string hybrid inverter for C&I use in 2025. The system supports on-grid and off-grid operation, along with energy management. Several units can work together for a total capacity of up to 1.25 MW. Deye has also entered the 100 kW to 125 kW range, with support for battery storage, AC coupling and parallel operation. Indian company SolarYaan offers hybrid inverters from 5 kW to 125 kW.

This matters because businesses may not want separate equipment for solar, storage and backup. One platform can reduce system complexity and help users manage power during peak demand or grid outages. Of course, the inverter still cannot perform magic. The battery, wiring and control system must match its rating.

2. Utility-scale inverters are getting more powerful

Large solar parks need fewer, more powerful inverters to handle rising project sizes. Inverter makers are now moving beyond the 300 kW to 350 kW range. At an InterSolar event in Gandhinagar, Sigenergy introduced a 500 kW utility-scale inverter. GoodWe has also shown interest in the 500 kW class.

Higher-capacity inverters can reduce the number of units needed at a solar plant. This may lower installation work, cabling needs and other balance-of-system costs. Fewer units can also make plant design and maintenance simpler.

Power rating alone does not decide whether an inverter is suitable. Project owners must check efficiency, cooling, grid support, voltage range, protection features and service access. A large inverter that struggles with heat or local grid rules will not offer much value.

3. Microinverters are gaining more attention

Microinverters convert power at the panel level. A standard string inverter connects to a group of panels, while a microinverter serves one panel or a small group. This setup can improve monitoring and limit the effect of shade, dirt or a weak panel on the rest of the system.

Enphase has been a known name in this segment, but more companies are entering the Indian market. Hoymiles expanded its local presence and secured a 360 MW supply agreement with Kosol Energie. The company has also received Bureau of Energy Efficiency certification for its products in India.

Deye offers microinverters with multiple maximum power point tracking, or MPPT, inputs. Sungrow has also launched a microinverter for the growing rooftop market. These products may suit homes with complex roofs, several roof angles or partial shade.

Adoption still faces limits. Microinverters can cost more, and many installers remain more familiar with string systems. Certification, spare parts and after-sales service will play a large role in deciding which brands gain trust.

4. Cybersecurity is now part of inverter selection

Modern inverters are connected devices. They collect generation data, send alerts and link solar systems to mobile apps or energy platforms. This makes cybersecurity and data storage important parts of product selection.

In August 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued guidelines linked to inverter-level generation data and rooftop solar data storage. The rules apply to inverter manufacturers and form part of India’s wider focus on communication, reporting and secure data access under PM Surya Ghar.

Manufacturers now need to consider more than power conversion. They must also plan for secure communication, software updates, data storage and links with government or approved servers. Buyers should ask where system data is stored, who can access it and how the device receives security updates.

5. PM Surya Ghar is expanding demand for small inverters

The residential market is growing at the other end of the size range. Under PM Surya Ghar, the government reported 7.77 million applications and 4.19 million rooftop installations by 5 August 2026. These systems added 14,894.95 MW of rooftop capacity under the scheme.

This growth is creating space for established brands and new firms that serve the 1 kW to 10 kW segment. Homeowners are also asking for more than a basic grid-connected inverter. Many want battery support, backup for key appliances, remote monitoring and the option to add storage later.

For buyers, this makes future planning useful. A low-cost inverter may work today but block a battery upgrade tomorrow. Before choosing a system, check its battery compatibility, warranty, local service network, monitoring features and compliance with current rooftop solar rules.
