Getting a loan sanctioned usually means paperwork, bank visits, and a fair bit of waiting around. Haryana just decided to skip all of that for solar panels. The state's Energy Minister, Anil Vij, has announced a new scheme where the electricity department comes to your doorstep instead of sending you to a bank.
What the scheme actually offers
Under this plan, homes with a 1 kilowatt load will get a solar system installed without needing any bank loan or guarantee. Department staff will visit the consumer's house, complete the paperwork on the spot, and set up the panels on the roof. Once that's done, the electricity bill for these households drops close to zero.
This is a big deal because Haryana has more than 7 lakh consumers who fall in this 1 kilowatt category. That's a lot of rooftops waiting for solar panels, and a lot of bills waiting to shrink.
The plan for bigger consumers too
It's not just the smaller households getting this benefit. Consumers with a load up to 5 kilowatts, who pay their electricity bills regularly, will get a similar deal. The government subsidy covers part of the cost, and the remaining amount can be paid back in easy instalments, again without visiting a bank.
Think of it as an EMI plan, minus the bank, minus the paperwork pile, and minus the anxious wait for loan approval.
A fresh idea for farmers
Vij also placed an interesting proposal before the Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal. The idea is simple: farmers who have vacant land, especially those whose family members live outside the state or country, can set up solar plants on that land at their own cost. The government will then buy the electricity generated from them at fixed rates.
This gives farmers a new source of income from land that's otherwise sitting idle, and it helps the state produce more clean energy. Two problems, one solution, which is always a nice combination.
Awards and recognition
Haryana is set to receive three national awards for its work on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Vij made it clear that these awards come from actual performance, not from recommendations or favours. The central government has already placed Haryana among the leading states for solar energy, and the state plans to keep that momentum going.
Vij also shared a bit of his own journey, mentioning how he worked across departments like health and home affairs, and even received recognition from Amitabh Bachchan for his work in the health sector. It's a small personal touch, but it shows the effort isn't limited to one department.
Numbers that matter
Haryana has received the highest number of applications under the PM Surya Ghar scheme compared to other states. The target for this year is 2.20 lakh solar rooftop installations, and the state wants to hit that number ahead of schedule.
The reasoning behind all this push is straightforward. Coal, gas, and petrol are limited resources. Solar energy comes from the sun, which, as far as we know, isn't sending an invoice anytime soon. Using this free and renewable source makes sense for meeting the state's growing energy needs.
What's happening with the Kusum Yojana
The PM Kusum Yojana, which helps farmers install solar pumps, has also seen strong participation in Haryana. The scheme's portal has been closed for new applications, but thousands of applications are still pending. The government has promised to clear these soon so that eligible farmers can get their solar pumps without further delay.
Why this matters for the average household
For a regular consumer, this scheme means less running around and lower bills. For farmers, it opens a door to extra income. For the state, it's a step toward reducing dependence on traditional power sources. Everyone gets something out of this, which doesn't happen too often with government schemes.
