Solar panels are popping up on rooftops across India faster than ever. Thanks to the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, even homes in small towns and villages are switching to solar power. Most people go for one of three setups: off-grid, on-grid, or hybrid. Today, let's talk about the hybrid system, since it's the one that suits most Indian homes dealing with power cuts.
What Exactly Is a Hybrid Solar System?
An off-grid system works in places with no power grid connection at all. On-grid and hybrid systems, on the other hand, need a grid connection to function. On-grid setups are common in cities where power cuts are rare. Hybrid systems shine in areas where electricity exists but keeps disappearing at odd hours.
The main difference between on-grid and hybrid systems comes down to one thing: batteries. Hybrid systems store extra power in batteries for backup. On-grid systems skip the battery altogether and send unused power straight to the grid, which you can use later at night.
If you're planning to install a 5kW hybrid system, you probably have three questions on your mind: What will it cost? How much subsidy can you get? And what all can it power? Let's break it down.
How Much Does a 5kW Hybrid Solar System Cost?
In India, a 5kW hybrid solar system can cost anywhere between ₹2,00,000 and ₹3,50,000, before subsidy. The price gap mostly depends on the type of battery storage you choose.
The solar panels themselves cost between ₹90,000 and ₹1,50,000, depending on the type. Mono panels cost less, while bifacial panels cost more but generate more power. The government recently introduced a new policy around solar panel manufacturing too, so prices may shift a bit going forward.
A 5kW solar inverter costs between ₹45,000 and ₹95,000, depending on the brand you pick.
Batteries take up the biggest chunk of your budget. Lead acid or tubular batteries cost at least ₹50,000. Lithium-ion batteries, which last longer and charge faster, can cost up to ₹1,20,000.
Add wiring and other components, and that's another ₹1,00,000 or so. Put it all together, and a basic 5kW system lands around ₹2,20,000, while an advanced setup with lithium batteries can touch ₹3,50,000.
How Much Subsidy Can You Get?
Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the central government offers a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3kW or higher. Some state governments add their own top-up too. Uttar Pradesh, for instance, gives an extra ₹30,000. That means residents there can save up to ₹1,08,000 in total, which is not a small amount by any measure.
What Can a 5kW System Actually Power?
A 5kW hybrid system usually fits farmhouses, bungalows, and small commercial buildings. It can comfortably run two to three 1.5-ton inverter ACs, a 1kW motor pump, eight to ten fans, a fridge, a cooler, and around 30 to 40 LED bulbs, all at once. Any leftover power can either charge your battery or get sent back to the grid.
How to Apply for the Subsidy
Applying for the subsidy is simpler than you'd expect. Here's how it works:
- Visit the official PM Surya Ghar website at solarrooftop.pmsuryaghar.gov.in
- Click on the Register option and proceed
- Enter your state, your electricity distribution company (DISCOM), and your consumer number
- Add your mobile number and email ID to complete registration
- Log in using your registered mobile number and OTP
- On the dashboard, click Apply For Rooftop Solar
- Fill out the application form and wait for approval
- Once approved, choose a registered vendor to install the panels on your roof
- The DISCOM will verify the installation after it's done
- The subsidy amount then gets transferred directly to your bank account
